These classic photographs by Thomas D. Mangelsen, which the renowned photographer himself refers to as his legacy photographs, have been personally selected by Thomas Mangelsen for a retrospective traveling museum exhibition.
Among photographs which members of the public will certainly be familiar with are Polar Dance from 1989 of polar bears appearing to dance, Mountain Outlaw, from 2014 of a grizzly bear charging head on through the snow, and from 1988, Catch of the Day which captures the exact moment that a spawning salmon, trying to leap over a waterfall along Alaska’s Brooks River, soars right into the waiting jaws of a massive brown bear. About Catch of the Day, Todd Wilkinson (author, The Last Great Wild Places: Forty Years of Wildlife Photography by Thomas D. Mangelsen), has written that it is not only one of the most widely circulated wildlife photographs in history, but also a monumental achievement in photography because it occurred before the advent of digital cameras and involves no digital manipulation.
The Thomas D. Mangelsen - A Life In The Wild Tour is produced by David J. Wagner, L.L.C.(davidjwagnerllc.com) in partnership with Thomas D. Mangelsen, Inc. (mangelsen.com)

New Acquisitions to TAM’s Permanent Collection
August 17 - November 4, 2023
TAM is honored to feature the work of Richard A. Young in his exhibit: "PASSAGES." Young is a multi-media artist from Boise. Focusing on grand philosophies and contemplation, "Passages,” pairs strong imagery with antique printer’s plates to invoke moody works of art. The exhibition and title refer to the many phases of life that include loss, recovery and instability. The primary means of conveying these ideas is the subdivision of the rectangle and square. It is used to arrange disparate imagery, wood blocks, color, paper and varying paint surfaces. Ultimately the grid serves as a metaphor for the hidden structure of our lives, a fragile, yet vital framework that is revealed when disruptions or traumatic events occur.
After a two-month artist retreat, Young sought to transform the landscape as a means to express the difficulties created from the loss of his wife. He experimented with double horizons and other techniques to convey what lies just beneath the surface within us.
“Passages” is a collection to show the turbulence and fragility of a lifetime, one that is constantly evolving and adapting.

State of the Forest is a large-scale fabric installation by Suze Woolf. In this compelling and immersive exhibit, 30 portraits of burned trees have been digitally transferred onto fabric and hang from the ceiling. Stories written by wildland firefighter and author Lorena Williams accompany each piece.
Woolf’s paintings are based on burned trees across western North America. The light, airy fabric reminds us that forests are not permanent; we must care for them.

SAYAKA GANZ: Reclaimed Creations
May 13-October 2, 2021
From a young age, Sayaka Ganz was influenced by the Japanese Shinto belief that all objects and organisms have spirits, and if these objects are discarded before their time they weep inside the trash bin. This idea is the foundation that has shaped Sayaka and her sculptures. Her strong artistic voice is expressed through her exclusive use of objects that have been discarded.
Sayaka’s recent sculptures depict animals in motion with rich colors and energy. She describes her style as “3D impressionism”, creating an illusion of solid form using plastic objects as brush strokes that become visible only upon observation from close proximity. Born in Yokohama, Japan, Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil, and Hong Kong. She currently resides in Indiana.
One of the important tasks for artists of our time is to bring more of the natural world back into people's lives, especially in urban areas. When we encounter the true wonders of nature, the beauty we behold transcends our intellects and reaches directly to our hearts. I desire a similar response from viewers of my work; to provoke a re-examination of our relationship to the natural world. –Sayaka Ganz
