 Upcoming Glazing Studio Sessions

Saturday, November 23rd 10am-1pm

Saturday, December 14th 10am-1pm

CLAY STUDIO
Explore throwing pots on the pottery wheel, hand-building techniques and the glazing process to create fun and functional pieces. Open to students of all skill levels. Studio fee includes clay, tools, use of pottery wheel, instruction, glazes and firing.  Recommended for ages 16 and up.  For younger students, see Mud Club and Tweens on the Wheel.

How It Works

Each Clay Studio session includes these steps:

  1. Sign up and attend a Clay Studio session of your choice
  2. Pottery is fired in a kiln
  3. Pick up your fired pottery (bisqueware)
  4. Bring your bisqueware to Glazing Studio
  5. Glazed pottery is fired in a kiln
  6. Pick up your finished piece from the museum

After your session making your pottery, we send it out to be fired in a kiln. This takes two to four weeks.  Once the pottery is fired, you will be notified by text or email that it is ready to be picked up. You can then bring your pottery to Glazing Studio (more info below).  Once it is glazed, we send your pottery out to be fired again. Two to four weeks later, you will be notified by text or email that your finished pottery is ready to be picked up.

Glazing Studio

Glazing studio is for anyone who created pottery in our Clay Studio classes. Glazing is included in the price of Clay Studio and is the last step in your pottery making process.

When is Glazing Studio?

Glazing Studio is once a month on a Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

Who teaches Glazing Studio?

There is no teacher for Glazing studio, it is a self-guided class. You should give yourself anywhere from 30-60 minutes to glaze your work depending on the size of your piece(s).

When will I get my glazed piece back?

Once you have glazed your pottery, we send it out to be fired again. This takes two to four weeks. Please sign in when you come to Glazing Studio so we can text or email you when your piece is done.

Do I have to attend the Glazing Studio class in the same month as the Clay Studio class I went to?

No! You can attend any Glazing Studio class that works best with your schedule. Just remember that fired unglazed works have a 30-working day pick-up policy. Since we have limited space to store pottery, you are required to pick up your piece and bring it back for a Glazing Studio of your choice.

Glazing Tips

  • Remove all dust from your pottery and wash your hands. Lotions and oils from your hands can cause your glaze to adhere unevenly or not at all.
  • Apply 2-3 coats of glaze with a brush, changing the brushstroke directions with each coat.
  • Apply lightest color before darker
  • Glaze the interior surfaces first.
  • DO NOT glaze the bottom of your piece. This may cause the work to fuse to the kiln shelf during firing. You can remove glaze with a damp sponge.
